Crush

Week 1 – Love is …

 February 4th

Main Thing…

It is so important to gain a healthy biblical view on these important topics in order to combat the lies that the media feeds you. Love is not hormones, feelings, or lust. Love is designed by God and we must understand what scripture says about it in order to understand it fully.

Scratch the Surface…

  • High’s and lows
  • What is your favourite cartoon love story?

Dig a Little Deeper…

  • Was there anything that stuck out to you from tonight’s message?
  • What are some things that love is not …
  • What does the bible teach that love is …
  • What does it mean in the bible when it says “do not awaken love before it so desires?”
  • Sexual sin starts with a thought … what does that mean?

Personal…

  • You could talk about your own journey honouring God in this area
  • You could share your thoughts on what to do to strive for purity and holiness

Applications…

  • Pray with your group
  • Is there anyone who wants prayer in this area?

Key Scriptures and thoughts…

1 Corinthians 6:18-20

“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.  Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Ephesians 5:31

“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

Exodus 20:14

“Do not commit adultery”

Song of Songs 3:5

“Do not awaken love until it so desires.”

Song of Songs 8:7

“Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

Song of Songs 8:6

Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.

I’m So Confused

Week 3 – Clay

January 28th

Main Thing …

One of the most powerful analogies in the Bible that relates to our growth and transformation is the analogy of the potter and the clay. The bible says that God is the potter and that we are the clay. Immersing ourselves in regular and daily scripture reading is one of the fundamental ways that we can allow God to begin to mold and shape us into who he wants us to be. Without the regular bible reading we become hard and stubborn, pushing back against God’s hand.

Scratch the Surface…

  • High’s and lows
  • Did you ever try eating modeling clay when you were a kid?

Dig a Little Deeper…

  • In what way can we, as humans, be compared to clay?
  • Why is soft clay easier to work with than hard clay?
  • How does the water help make the hard clay soft?
  • How can you apply all this to your life?
  • How important is daily scripture in your life?
  • Do you find it difficult to set aside time for the Bible?
    • What is the hardest part about setting aside time?

Personal…

  • You could talk about your own journey with reading your Bible
  • You could share your struggles with having a hard heart

Applications…

  • Pray with your group
  • Is there anyone who wants God to mold and shape their lives more?

Key Scriptures and thoughts…

Isaiah 64:8

But now, O Lord, You are our Father, We are the Clay and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your Hand.

Jeremiah 18

So I went to the potter’s house, and sure enough, the potter was there, working away at his wheel. Whenever the pot the potter was working on turned out badly, as sometimes happens when you are working with clay, the potter would simply start over and use the same clay to make another pot.

Week 2 – Cannonball

January 21st

Main Thing …

Perhaps during all this cold weather and snow, you have dreamed a little bit about those hot and sunny days of summer. A summer would not be complete without the opportunity to jump off a diving board and do a massive cannonball into a pool. Reading the Bible is very much like jumping into a pool. There is a huge difference between dipping your toes in and doing a cannonball. We will be exploring some ways that we can dive into scripture and discover how it can have a huge impact on our lives.

Scratch the Surface…

  • High’s and lows
  • What do you miss about summer?

 Dig a Little Deeper…

  • What are some reasons why reading your Bible is like doing a cannonball?
  • Why do you think that reading your Bible is important?
  • What are some challenges to reading your Bible?
  • How is reading your Bible similar to eating food?
  • How does the Holy Spirit help us when we read the Bible?
  • How does reading the Bible change your perspective?

 Personal…

  • You could talk about your own journey with reading your Bible
  • You could share your struggles with reading your Bible

 Applications…

  • Pray with your group
  • Is there anyone who wants to read more and wants to pray about it?

 Key Scriptures and thoughts…

2 Timothy 3:16

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,”

Psalm 119:105

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

Psalm 119:11

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

John 17:17

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”

Matthew 4:4

“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 5:6

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

I’m So Confused

Week 1 – Go Against the Flow

January 14th

Main Thing …

If you are ready for an earful from a teenager, just ask them the question: “What is on your mind?” The truth is that you will likely get a long list of things because there are so many things going on in the mind of a teenager, and the end result of that conversation might be … “I’m so confused.” God teaches us that if we fix our mind on the truth found in scripture that we would be able to navigate through the confusion. We will be studying the scripture and why it is important, and why it is so critical to our daily pursuit of God.

Scratch the Surface…

  • High’s and lows
  • How was the holiday?
  • New Year’s resolution/goals?

Dig a Little Deeper…

  • Have you ever seen salmon swimming upstream?
  • What are some of the biblical standards that “go against the flow” of society?
  • Just like the intro video tonight … What is on your mind?
  • Romans 12:2 What is the difference between “transform and conform?”
  • Why do you think personal time with God each day is important?
  • Talk this through …
    • “Personal time with God is super simple but super difficult”

Personal…

  • You could talk about your own journey of your personal time with God
  • You could share how you spend time with God

Applications…

  • Pray with your group
  • Are there any of you who want to make this a part of your daily routine?

Key Scriptures and thoughts…

Romans 12:2

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

These people set and example by going against the flow

  • Moses – Led Israel out of Egypt
  • SMA – Everyone bowed down, they didn’t
  • Jesus – Everyone fighting to be in charge and Jesus washed their feet
  • David – Everyone was scared to fight Goliath, but not David
  • Noah – Everyone made fun of him, but He obeyed God and built a boat

I'm So Confused - January 2015 - Main Image

Matt 22:37-38

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your heart and with all your mind.”

GOD IN US

Week 1 – God is Powerful

Samson

 November 19th

Main Thing …

It is clear in Scripture and as you look at the world around you, that God is Powerful.  As you look at the life of Samson, you see God’s power at work in his life.  It is cool to see how Samson reflected God’s power in his own life.  If God is powerful, then how should we live differently?  If God is powerful, then what can we do to see more of God’s power at work in our own lives?

Scratch the Surface…

  • High’s and lows
  • Ummm … arm wrestling match … obviously

Dig a Little Deeper…

  • Talk about some powerful things that God has done
  • What are some powerful things that Samson did?
  • Talk through these points that we learned from Samson’s life and apply them to your own life

o   When you go through a battle you will be drained, but God will restore you

o   God is powerful so find your strength in Him

o   God is powerful, does not mean that you are invincible

  • Think deep … If God is Powerful, then why doesn’t He just “fix” all the chaos in this world?

o   Why doesn’t He answer all our prayers?

o   Why doesn’t He help people who are starving, or in really rough situations

o   (you probably will not “fully” answer these questions, but it is good to wrestle with it)

Personal…

  • You could share about a time when you saw God’s power at work in your life
  • You could talk about a time when you prayed for something and it didn’t happen and how you dealt with that

Applications…

  • Pray with your group
  • Are there any ways that you can live different this week because God is Powerful?

Key Scriptures and thoughts…

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.Luke 3:16

The hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.” Joshua 4:24

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. Luke 24:19

With a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 136:12

He is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Job 9:4

It is he who made the earth by his power. Jeremiah 10:12
