Week 1 – Friends

October 8th

Main Thing …

  • Friendships are important to each one of us, and the Bible has a ton to say about friendships.  Depending on how you choose your friends, it can be a positive thing or a negative thing.  As we look at the dynamics of the relationship between Mary, Martha and Jesus, we will gain some huge insight.

Scratch the Surface…

  • High’s and lows
  • If you had Jesus coming over for supper … what meal would you make? Why

Dig a Little Deeper…

  • In this story … what did Mary do right and what did Martha do wrong?
  • What is the difference between having influence on your friends and your friends having influence on you?
  • What are some reasons why God would want you to choose your friendships carefully?

Personal…

  • You could share about a valuable friendship growing up
  • You could talk about a destructive friendship growing up and the lessons that you learned from that

Applications…

  • Pray with your group
  • Are there any friendships that you feel like you need to withdraw from?

Key Scriptures …

Luke 10:38-42

“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.   She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.  But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”   “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Matt 6:33

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
